Mabo Day (Australia)

Mabo Day in Australia commemorates the legacy of Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his landmark court case. In 1992, Mabo’s legal challenge successfully overturned the Australian doctrine of terra nullius, which asserted that the land belonged to nobody and formed the basis for the colonization of Indigenous lands across Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. This pivotal moment also marked Australia’s first successful native title claim. Celebrated during National Reconciliation Week, Mabo Day is honored and celebrated locally through various events across the nation. It holds particular significance in the Torres Strait Islands, where it is observed as a public holiday.
