Black History month
Black History month Aka African-American History Month, this annual observance began in 1970 in the United States. It grew from an earlier week-long observation created by African-American scholar Carter Woodson to counter lies and disinformation in the 1915 racist hit movie Birth of a Nation, the timing chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and slavery abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Eventually, Black studies programs lobbied for the establishment of Black History Month, and in 1976 then-President Gerald Ford created it as a national observance. The purpose of the observation is to promote the study of Black history. Black History Month is now also observed in the United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland.
