Heroes Day (Namibia)

Heroes Day is a national public holiday in Namibia, celebrated annually on August 26th to commemorate the Namibian War of Independence which began on August 26th, 1966 at Omugulugwombashe. The day is recognized by the United Nations as Namibia Day, but Namibians refer to it as Heroes’ Day. National celebrations take place annually at different places, usually in the north of Namibia near important battle zones. Hundreds of people gather to watch leaders officially commemorate veterans of the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN). Military medals are also handed out on the day. Heroes’ Acre, a war memorial outside of Windhoek, was opened on Heroes’ Day in 2002. The day is celebrated to never forget the sacrifices and efforts of all the proud Namibians who fought for freedom.
