Independence Day (Mexico)

Mexican Independence Day is a national public holiday in Mexico, commemorating the moment when leader and priest Father Hidalgo called for Mexico’s liberation from Spain in 1810, resulting in an 11 year battle that culminated in 1821, after which the Treaty of Córdoba was signed by Spain and formally recognised Mexican independence.  Celebrations include fireworks displays after dark, with the president standing on the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City delivering a speech honouring those who fought for the country’s independence.
