Independence Day (Somalia)

Independence Day (Somalia), also known as Keriba Lagaw Buiya, commemorates the arrival of the London Missionary Society at Erub Island (Darnley Island) in 1871. Clan Elder and Warrior Dadad awaited their arrival, prepared to both welcome and defend his land. Upon arrival, Reverend Samuel McFarlane knelt and offered the Bible to Dadad, who accepted it as ‘the light,’ integrating Christianity into their cultural customs and identity, known as ‘Ailan Kastom.’ The day is marked with re-enactments, church services, hymns, and feasts.
