International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Women bear by far the greatest risk of intimate partner and family related homicide and violence. The UN established this day in 1979 with the vision of creating an equal  world free of gender-based violence, following the events of  the Mirabal sisters, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler, Rafael Trujillo. This day aims to push policymakers and the distribution of resources dedicated to ending violence worldwide, raising the awareness of tvarious forms of violence against women.
