International Day of the Victims of Enforced Dissapearances

International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2010, sheds light on the widespread use of enforced disappearances as a tool of political repression and coercion. Originating as a tactic of military dictatorships, enforced disappearances have tragically affected hundreds of thousands of individuals across at least 85 countries. The day aims to raise awareness of the profound impact of these disappearances on the victims’ families and communities, as well as the ongoing harassment faced by human rights defenders and their loved ones. Additionally, it underscores the particular challenges faced by women who are left to provide for their families in the wake of enforced disappearances.
