Orthodox Christmas

Orthodox Christmas according to the Julian Calendar, which pre-dates the Gregorian Calendar used by much of the world, the birth of Christ took place on or around the 7th of January, instead of the 25th of December.  Many Orthodox Christians fast before January 7, usually excluding meat and dairy products.  On Orthodox Christmas, however, there are feasts and celebrations, with people enjoying the company of friends and family. This day is a public holiday in Belarus, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Russia, and Ukraine.
