Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (Australia, NSW)
Attended by hundreds of thousands of people annually, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has become an iconic pride event in Australia. It is the largest of its kind in Oceania, and is an opportunity for self-expression and celebration amongst the LBGTQ+ community. Historically, the event began in June 1978, when a small group gathered to contribute to International Gay Celebrations erupted into police violence and arrests. Every year has a theme, such as āRiseā, āUnited We Shineā, and āFearlessā. Events include parties, the parade, and local council events.
