San Martin Day is a national holiday in Argentina celebrated on the third Monday in August. This holiday commemorates the death of José de San Martín, who is regarded as the most important Argentinian founding father. San Martin was a general in the Argentine army and the frontline leader in the struggle for independence from Spain by Argentina and other southern nations of Southern America. San Martin is considered a national hero, and his death is observed as a national holiday in Argentina. On this day, Argentinians celebrate their history and the journey to its independence. The Order of the Liberator General San Martin, named in his honor, is the highest decoration awarded by the Argentine government.
