A national annual public holiday in Timor-Leste held over several days, this holiday is dedicated to honouring and remembering all those who fought for liberty and independence. The holiday was established in 2000, after East Timor gained independence from Indonesia and became a sovereign nation. The date marks several important events, including the first national conference of the Revolutionary Front for an Independent East Timor (FRETILIN), the creation of the National Council of Timorese Resistance and the election of Xanana Gusmão (b. 1946) as the Political Commissioner of FRETILIN and Commander of FALINTIL (Timorese army).
