Diversity Atlas Connects Communities & Conferences

This month we discuss some highlights from this month’s events, articles and experiences. Our Diversity Atlas team has been making appearances at a number of conferences, mapping events and connecting with communities across Australia and the globe.

The Diversity Atlas team attended the 2023 TechDiversity Awards, an annual event bringing together DEI practitioners and professionals across the tech workforce to celebrate, support and reflect on the impact of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion on the Tech Industry.

The tech industry itself, from what we experience, are leaders in not just technical innovation (because that’s their job) but also, well, everything else, including DEI. This is presumably because they understand more acutely that diversity and inclusion lead to greater innovation and therefore productivity.

– Quincy Hall, Cultural Ambassador

For the second year running, our survey tool mapped the event live and in real-time, sharing the remarkable diversity and cultural vibrancy of the audience. The results were presented by our Senior Cultural Ambassador Getrude Matshe and Cultural Attache Quincy Hall. Our CTO Rezza Moieni was keen to connect with the significant number of other Persian speakers the survey revealed in the room, and we were all delighted to find there was an intermediate speaker of Esperanto in our midst.

Global Inclusion Online Forum: DEI Data Summit

The Global Inclusion Online Forum is a global digital platform comprising an annual forum and smaller-scale events throughout the year promoting diversity, equity and inclusion for advocates and practitioners. Our Director of DEI Roman Ruzbacky and CTO Rezza Moieni are presenting a session at the unholy hour of 4.00am AEST on ‘Addressing Diversity Fatigue in Data Analysis and Reporting Impacting Decision Making’. Limited free tickets to the Forum are available through the website.

Diversity Atlas at London Tech Week

Chief Experience Officer Michael Walmsley is heading to London to visit London Tech Week 2023, taking place from 12 to 16 June.

“I come across many diversity measurement tools and Diversity Atlas is heads and shoulders above them all.

It’s robust, innovative, practical and essential for any meaningful transformation. I’m a big fan of the tech and the people that are behind it.”

Michael Walmsley

Our Senior Cultural Ambassador Getrude Matshe and Marketing Manager Michael Walmsley kept a steady presence at the Rotary International Convention, which was held in Melbourne this year.

I am the president for SouthWest USA; lived in Alburquerque, New Mexico 2015-2017 working at the University of New Mexico lecturing in Film

Diversity Atlas and SouthWest Rotary eClub collaborated and shared a booth at the convention and we got participants to do the Diversity Atlas survey.

Rotary wants to increase diversity by 30% in the next 12 months and this was a good opportunity to meet Rotary leadership and district governors from all over the world

2022-23 President Jennifer Jones is eager to advance Rotary’s narrative. As Rotary International’s first female president, Jennifer is the perfect leader to spread the word about the good Rotary does in the world, and inspire its members to keep going.

It was also an opportunity for me to raise and awareness of the projects my club has in Africa, Mexico, USA and to fundraise for the club

– Getrude Matshe, Senior Cultural Ambassador

May Calendar Updates

Calendar Spotlight: Solstice

In Australia and the southern hemisphere, 21 June is winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Throughout history and across the world people have hosted festivals and ceremonies to celebrate the winter solstice. Known as the day of the “sun’s rebirth”, winter solstice celebrations often embrace the symbolism of fire and light and honour life, death, the rising sun and the moon.

In the northern hemisphere, June 21 marks the summer solstice. The longest day of the year is often celebrated with outdoor feasts, singing, dancing and bonfires. Solstice gatherings can transcend all divisions in the human world by reminding us of our inalienable shared connection to the rhythms of the sun.
