Zambia Independence Day

Zambia Independence Day marks the independence from the United Kingdom in 1964. In 1888, Cecil Rhodes obtained mineral rights to the region, and all tribal regions were merged into one in 1911, named Northern Rhodesia, after Cecil Rhodes. In 1964, the British colony of Northern Rhodesia became the independent Republic of Zambia and Prime Minister Kenneth Kaunda became inaugural president serving until 1991
