World Day for Safety and Health at Work
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, established by the International Labour Organization (ILO), is observed annually on April 28th to underscore the critical importance of occupational health and safety (OHS) in workplaces worldwide. This day serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the significance of robust OHS systems and practices in safeguarding workers’ well-being and preventing work-related accidents, injuries, and illnesses.
The World Day for Safety and Health at Work highlights the need for meaningful collaboration and cooperation among governments, employers, workers, public health actors, and other stakeholders at both national and enterprise levels to promote a culture of safety in workplaces. It emphasizes the shared responsibility of all parties in ensuring safe and healthy working environments and underscores the vital role of proactive measures, such as risk assessments, training programs, and regulatory frameworks, in preventing workplace hazards and mitigating occupational risks.
Through advocacy campaigns, educational initiatives, and community outreach activities, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work aims to foster greater awareness, dialogue, and action on occupational health and safety issues. It provides an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange best practices, share knowledge and experiences, and mobilize collective efforts towards achieving safer and healthier workplaces for all workers, thereby contributing to sustainable development and social progress globally.
