Ullortuneq is Greenland’s National Day, observed as a national public holiday. The term “ullortuneq” translates to “the longest day,” reflecting the significance of the summer solstice in Greenland. Established by the Greenland Home Rule in 1985, this day holds cultural and historical importance, symbolizing the enduring spirit and identity of the Greenlandic people. Additionally, Ullortuneq now also commemorates the enactment of the Act on Greenland in 2009, which granted increased autonomy to Greenland. Through various festivities, ceremonies, and cultural events, Ullortuneq serves as a time for Greenlanders to celebrate their heritage, traditions, and journey towards self-governance.
