Mabo Day (Australia)

Commemorates Mer Island man Eddie Koiki Mabo and his successful court case, which in 1992 overturned the Australian fiction of terra nullius (‘land that belongs to nobody’) that had formed the legal basis for occupation of Indigenous peoples’ lands throughout Australia and the Torres Strait Islands. It also represents Australia’s first successful native title claim. Mabo Day occurs during National Reconciliation Week and is commemorated and celebrated locally in events around Australia. It is a public holiday in the Torres Strait Islands.
